Zum Kranz
About This Spot
Stepping into Zum Kranz feels like finding a warm corner in the heart of Freiburg’s historic Herrenstraße. The restaurant embraces you softly, with wooden beams and traditional touches that invite a comfortable, unhurried evening. It’s a space where the pace slows down—a quiet refuge where locals and visitors alike settle in around shared tables or cozy nooks, making room for conversation, laughter, and the simple joy of good company.
Behind its unpretentious facade lies a place deeply rooted in the regional rhythm, where every meal carries the subtle familiarity of home-cooked tradition. The kitchen sends out generous plates brimming with dishes crafted from quality ingredients, each one telling its own story. Whether it’s a classic schnitzel paired with golden-fried potatoes or a robust Schweinehaxe accompanied by tender spätzle, the food here speaks of comfort and care. The dining experience is not rushed; it’s about savoring moments, bites, and sips—whether a local Freiburger beer poured with a practiced hand or a satisfying slice of homemade apfelstrudel enjoyed at the end of the meal.
The staff at Zum Kranz are more than servers—they are hosts who genuinely enjoy sharing this slice of German culinary culture. Their warmth and ease create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages you to relax, linger, and perhaps return time and again. It’s a place that values sincerity over showmanship, where the joy comes from good food, friendly faces, and a sense of belonging right in the heart of the city’s vibrant old town.

A small restaurant but very cozy with friendly staff. Spent a few days at Freiburg and ate there twice. The food portions were generous and quality ingredients was used. The food tasted fantastic thus the second visit. I had one of the best beilagen salats during my visit to Germany. A must try. Do take note that they have English menu for tourists.

Delicious place to have some real German food! Beautiful German restaurant with typical traditional style. You can have a table for yourself or share on one of the bigger one the German style. Service is incredible and our waiter was so friendly, fast and nice to talk. You see they have fun doing their job and that happiness is contagious! Beer is traditional beer from Freiburg and the cuisine is delicious! I had a Schnitzel and the seasoning was outstanding! The Panade was crispy but also juicy enough and had a great taste. Probably a secret recipe since the taste was just delicious. It is served with salad and fries. Both very tasty! The fries just done at the perfect crisp and salad with enough sauce. The atmosphere is very lively but super comfortable. You can enjoy your beer and food without any haste. Even though the place is quite small, we did not have to wait to get a table. You can pay with cash or card (from 20€), so it is easy to enjoy your visit. Highly recommended and can’t wait to come back!

We are searching for a restaurant in the street and found this one, in a very nice neighborhood. The guys were very friendly and the food was excellent. We recomended! And they have a marvelous apfelstrudel!!

Great local pub, fantastic food, large portions. We sat at the bar and had a fun time with the owner. He spoke good English.

Came for an early dinner with my wife and small dog. Dogs welcome. Food was very tasty, big portions. Prices seemed reasonable reasonable friendly enough service. Cash only unfortunately.

First of all, make a reservation! This place fills up quick and once it does, that's it. The service is friendly enough once you're seated and they took our order quickly. We shared a table with a couple of other groups due to the limited seating, which was kind of nice because you feel like part of the community. I decided to try the cordon bleu because it featured heavily on the menu and my date opted for the Dreierlei, which is kind of an eclectic mix of shredded meat, onions, and a sweet-ish sauce. I tried a bite and it was decent -- something to try one time while you're in the region but not something I'd order on the regular. My cordon bleu was also tasty but I'd probably go for the normal schnitzel next time. We enjoyed our meals while listening to the local German chatter, occasionally hearing other languages from the tourists who also found this spot. Overall we were happy with the meal but will need to try some other dishes to really get the full experience. Hope to see you there!
